Understanding How Does a Predator Think?

Why would we want to do that? Because it may save your life.

When it comes to violence, it can shatter lives. As a self-defense instructor and personal protection expert, I train people mentally, as well as physically.

Predators of violent crimes know what they want, and are laser focused on getting it. The important difference between them and us, rules don’t apply.

While we have these self imposed, moralistic constraints on ourselves as to what would be acceptable, there are none for the predator. That gives them a HUGE tactical advantage. In a violent confrontation, the predator is coming to severely harm or kill us. Period.

We apply our rules and standards to every aspect of our lives, including our personal protection, till we learn why that can cost us our lives. For example; during a rape, the predator wants to violate the victim. Should we hesitate to use any and all means to escape so the predator does not get what he wants?

Would it be “acceptable” to use force to get away? Would an eye gouge or palm strike to the nose, shattering it, be a place we are willing to go? If not, then mentally and physically, the predator has succeeded and the victim is violated and traumatized and possibly killed.

When it comes to predators in a violent encounter, we need to make the mindset switch that it is my life or his and it is NOT going to be mine! How do we do this? PRACTICE. TRAINING.

Using a simplistic example, using your left hand to brush your teeth if you’re right hand dominant. It will not come naturally. But with time and purposeful training, it can become automatic.

The first step is to understand there is a BIG difference in how the predator thinks in contrast to how we think, which gives them the advantage.

The second is training yourself on how to go to the place of bringing everything you got because if not, you could lose everything.

This is done through simulation training, forcing your brain to change and training it to accept the use of violence to save your own life. Also developing the skills and knowledge base to know how to defend yourself with the optimum amount of force, targeting the vulnerable places on the body, allowing for escape and survival.

Personal protection expert, Tim Larkin, sums it up this way, “Until you approach violence the same, he will always have an edge. You do understand about morality and fair play. But in the moment your life is in danger, you have to shut that awareness off and go after him - any way possible.”
