DON’T BECOME A STATISTIC
I meet with so many people from all walks of life. I have found most fall into one of two categories. On one hand, I meet those that feel assault, rape, abduction, and stalking, happens to someone else, not them. And then there are those that cannot get to any one of the 6 degrees of Bacon without having known someone or been a victim of a violent crime themselves.
I posted on Facebook some stories of survivors of assaults I was going to have in my self-defense class not long ago. In the comment section someone asked for a summary because she did not feel like reading beyond 2 sentences. The response was, “A nice lady is talking about violent crimes but don’t worry, nothing near us.” Actually 3 out of the four assaults happened in Conway. I realized then, that Awareness Training not only needed to be taught in my class, but also on the streets so people realize, this is real and the chances of succumbing to or knowing someone involved in a violent crime is astronomical.
Here are some statistics I was surprised by myself:
Conway is only 8th out of 100 (safest) cities nationwide. It is more dangerous to live in than 92% of U.S. cities. (neighborhoodscout.com/ar/conway/crime)
Little Rock is the most dangerous city in Arkansas. Locals have a 1 in 69 chance of being victim of a violent crime every year. Onlyinyourstate.com
Arkansas rated 4th most dangerous state in the nation. Onlyinyourstate.com
If we were to look at sexual assaults alone, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will have been victims of rape or attempted rape in their lifetimes. That equates to nearly 23 million women and 1.7 million men.
I am sharing the facts with you because knowledge is potential power. Unless we act on it, it is wasted and then victimization is more likely to occur.
Now that we are aware, what’s next?
According to R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense Systems), “preparation through education and training is usually the best way to survive an assault situation. By attending a credible physical defense program, a woman (or man) can substantially develop their options with regard to resistance.”
I encourage each one of you to PLEASE take your protection into your own hands. I caution against carrying a firearm or Taser unless you are properly trained and confident you will use it versus the situation reverses and your weapon is used against you.
A good self-defense class should develop body mechanics, improve physical fitness and increase self-confidence. A well-rounded program should include awareness and assertiveness training to increase risk assessment and chances of escape.
The numbers are real. There are people out there that want to hurt others they perceive as weak and vulnerable. The options are real too. We have the choice of training with Instructors that are empathic and proficient and becoming empowered to counter the attacker with specific skills and a confident mindset, determined mindset.
